Cairns miniguide
The port city of Cairns is located in northeastern state of Queensland on the Pacific coast, and is the 14th largest city in Australia (128,300 inhabitants in 2004).Cairns is a popular tourist destination because of its tropical climate and good swimming.
There is also Australia's largest tourist attraction - the Great Barrier Reef - only an hour's boat ride from Cairns. This is the world's largest coral reef with wonderful coral and sub tropical fish in a rainbow of colors.
In Cairns city has good shopping at stores and malls, and there are many nice restaurants and cafes in the city. The city also has several museums, art galleries, theaters, bars and casinos.
Cairns has also many amusement parks / theme parks - including Rain Fore Station (a beautiful natural park where you can also visit the department Koala & Wildlife Park). Another major tourist attraction is the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway - a cable car that runs through the tropical rainforest from Caravonica in Cairns to Kuranda. Its orbital distance is 7.5 km.
The city has its own airport - Cairns International Airport , located 7 km north of downtown.
