In 2008, the population of Antwerp on over 470 000, while the suburbs will figure up to almost 1 200 000Antwerp is a city in northern Belgium , a short distance from the Dutch border.The city is situated on the River Scheldt and has long been one of the world's largest ports. In recent years, much of the port activities were moved to Zeebrugge in the northwest.
In the 1500s the Antwerp one of the most important cities in Europe in terms of trade and economy, and the world's first stock exchange was founded here in 1526. However, extending the city's commercial history even further back, to 800's when the site was a marketplace. Today tempts city with beautiful buildings that the Gothic cathedral, Onze Lieve Vrouwe-Kathedraal and many museums. Cityscape is a tasty mix of broad avenues and narrow, picturesque streets.
Antwerp International Airport (Deurne) is too small to handle the largest planes, but it is still possible to fly to, among other things, London .The airport is located just 2 km outside the city.
