Elsinore in itself has approx. 35,000 inhabitants, while the whole municipality's population is almost double that. Elsinore is located at the narrowest part of the Øresund, and you can take the car ferry over to Helsingborg in Scania ( Sweden ). The stretch Elsinore - Helsingborg is just 4 km, and the crossing takes approx. 20 minutes.

Elsinore has many tourist attractions, the most famous is Kronborg Castle - a Renaissance palace from the 1500s which is beautifully situated in the approach to the Øresund. Kronborg Castle is listed on UNESCO's World Heritage list and has 200,000 visitors annually.

Other popular attractions include Carmelite Monastery - Scandinavia's best preserved monasteries and St. Olai Church - the oldest building in 1559 (where the oldest parts of the church stems from the 1200s). Many tourists also visit the art museum Louisiana, Øresund Aquarium and the Technical Museum.

Nearest airport is Copenhagen Airport, Kastrup - located approx. 50 km south of Elsinore.
