Carcassonne miniguide
Carcassonne is located in the south of France , just north of the Pyrenees.It is the capital of the Aude Department, which belongs to the region Languedoc-Roussillon.
Aude river divides the city into two, and the older, upper part - Cité de Carcassonne - is one of France's biggest tourist attractions. The whole town appears in fact as a museum of befestningsarkitekturen in the Middle Ages (ca. 500-1300 ADKr.), In that most of the historic buildings are preserved within intact, double walled. Cité de Carcassonne has entirely been on UNESCO's World Heritage list since 1997.
On the other side of the river is the lower, modern town Ville Basse. This is where most of the nearly 50,000 residents in the city of residence and it is this district that is in expansion. The two districts are connected by bridges Pont Vieux and Pont Neuf. Through the Ville Basse is also another of France's major sights - the 240 km-long Canal du Midi, which connects the Mediterranean with the Atlantic Ocean. The canal was opened already in 1681, and also the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
