Lyon miniguide
Lyon is located in southeastern France - in the region Rhone-Alpes - and belongs to the Ministry Rhone.Lyon is situated at the confluence of the rivers Rhône and Saône, and is the 3rd largest city with 472,300 inhabitants (2006). If you include the metropolitan area, the population is increasing to 1.4 million.
The city is known for its historic and architectural landmarks, and parts of the old town "Vieux Lyon" is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are many buildings from the Middle Ages.
Lyon has more than 20 different museums. Some of the most popular is the "Musée des Arts Decoratifs" - where you can see furniture and art objects from 1600 - and 1700's and "Musée des Beaux-Arts" - Art Museum with a large collection of paintings and sculptures from the 1300s to middle of the 1900s. It is located in a former monastery from 1660's.
One of the major tourist attractions are the white basilica "Notre Dame de Fourvière", built between 1872 - 1894, beautifully situated on a hill in the city.
Near the basilica is the Roman ruins with the remains of the ancient theater and the Gallo-Roman Museum.
Lyon has its own airport, Aéroport - Saint - Exupéry, situated 25 km east of downtown.
