Dachau miniguide
Dachau is located in southern Germany on the River Amper - a few kilometers from Munich , and belongs to the state of Bavaria.Dachau has 41,000 inhabitants (2008), and is an industrial city.
Dachau has a rich cultural life, and in Old Town, historic buildings, museums and art galleries.
A major tourist attraction in town is Dachau Castle from the 1700s, situated on a hill. The castle is open to the public, and the place is surrounded by beautiful gardens.
Other sights in town is the Catholic Church of St. James from 1625 - with its 44 meter high tower from 1678, water tower from 1910 and "Neue Gallerie Dachau" - the gallery with an exhibition of contemporary art.
Dachau concentration camp was the first camp in Germany - started in 1933. At least 190,000 prisoners died during the 13 years the site was operational, and together with the concentration camp at Auschwitz has Dacha become a symbol of the Nazi concentration camps. The camp is now a memorial, and the place is visited by more than 600,000 annually.
The nearest airport is Munich Airport, which is located 30 miles north of Dachau.
