Gera (100,200 inhabitants in 2009) is situated by the river Weisse Elster in the central part of Germany , and belongs to the state of Thuringia.The city was founded in 995 and the Municipal Court in 1237
Gera has a rich cultural life with museums, theater and annual festivals, as well as a number of historical sights. By Markt - the central plaza - the city's Town Hall from 1576 in Renaissance style. A trip into town hall octagonal tower (57 meters) is a popular tourist attraction, where there are great views over the city.
Other points of interest in Gera: Otto-Dix-Haus - an exhibition of artwork by Otto Dix (1891-1969), Castle Cheese Stein - originally from the 1100s, the theater in 1902, St. Salvatorkirken from 1720, St. Mary's Church from 1440 , The Natural History Museum - and the city's oldest building "Febersche", which today houses a wonderful arts and crafts museum.
