Greifswald miniguide
Greifswald is located in northeastern Germany , by the river Ryck which flows into the Baltic Sea.The town has 54,000 inhabitants (2007) and belongs to the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Greifswald is a seaport, industrial and university city, which also has a rich cultural life - in theater, museums and several historical buildings. The University was founded in 1456 and is one of the oldest in Europe.
In the Altstadt - Old Town - there are many beautiful medieval buildings. Some of the most visited is St. Mary's Church, James Church and the Church of St. Nicholas - all from 1200 - and 1300's. The Marktplatz with the Town Hall from 1400-century's worth a visit.
A major tourist attraction in Greifswald is Pommersches Landes Museum - a museum with exhibits in the areas of geology, archeology, folklore and art.
A few miles east of town lies the fishing village of Wieck is a popular destination for tourists in Greifswald. Wieck has a pleasant maritime atmosphere - and here there are several picturesque fishermen's houses and monastery ruins Eldena from 1199.
Otherwise, Greifswald offer visitors great swimming with sandy beaches and several recreation areas.
The nearest regional airport is Heringsdorft Airport, which lies 70 km southeast of Greifswald.
Alternatively, the airport Rostock - Laage Airport is used.This is located 106 km west of Greifswald.
