Velbert miniguide
Velbert, which is a medium sized city with approx. 90,000 inhabitants (2008), located at the river Ruhr in western Germany - specifically in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.It is part of the metropolitan area Rheinschiene, such as also includes the state capital Düsseldorf .The total population in this area is around 7.5 million. Velbert, located in the hills 200-300 m above sea level, is the highest town here.
The city is famous for many great cultural events - including in the 25 year-old cultural venue, the Forum Niederberg. There is a theater and concert hall seating 700 people, spacious convention facilities - and a distinctive museum: Deutsches Schloss-und Beschlägemuseum. Here you will find a large collection of historic keys, locks, fittings and hinges - reflecting Velberts long tradition as a production site for just such items.
Another popular attraction is Schloss Hardenberg in town Neviges - a castle with origins in the 1100s, but gained its present form 500 years later. It takes place regularly exciting cultural events. Nearby are the ruins of fortresses from the Middle Ages - Burg Hardenberg.
Velberts most famous landmark is the radio mast Rundfunk Sender Langenberg, spanning the entire 301 meters in the air.
There is a smaller regional airport 10 km northwest of Velbert - Essen / Mülheim Airport, while the nearest international airport is Dusseldorf Airport , located 27 km southwest of the city.
