Sligo is situated on Ireland's west coast, and is the second largest urban area in Connacht for Galway.The port town of Sligo is the capital of the county with the same name and has approx. 18,000 inhabitants.
In Sligo there are attractions such as Sligo Abbey, a dominikansk monkekloster, founded by Maurice Fitzgerald in 1253 Two fires in 1414 and 1642 leave the place in ruins, but much of the structure of the monastery remains. Sligo also has a monument in memory of those who starved to death during "the potato Famine in 1845-1849. Then emigrated 30,000 Irishmen emigrated to the U.S. via Sligo.The city also has an Art Gallery, Model Arts and Niland Gallery, which has a permanent collection of Jack B. Yeats, the famous poet's brother. Visitors can also visit the racecourse, spa or go on boat rides and kite.
Sligo Airport is located eight miles west of Sligo town center, in Strandhill.
