Garda miniguide
Lake Garda is Italy's largest lake and is located in the northeastern part of the country. It is about the same distance to Venice in the east as to Milan in the west, and several small towns located on the shores of the lake. The cultivated olive and fruit around the lake, especially the southwestern shore is lush. The area is a popular tourist destination and the town of Riva del Garda is one of the most visited. This town is located on the north side of the lake and has a population of approx. 15000 (2008).
Riva del Garda has been visited by tourists since the late 1800's and several famous personalities such as Friedrich Nietzsche has visited the city. This is also an old city with many historical sites including a fort from the 1100s and the church of Maria Assunta first mentioned in documents from 1106.
Milan Orio al Serio Airport is an international airport located approx. 80 km from the southern part of Lake Garda, about 130 km from Riva del Garda.
