Matera miniguide
Matera is located in southern Italy and capital of the province of Matera.The city is located in the Basilicata region that borders on the Ionian Sea in the south and to the region Apulia located on Italy's heel, to the east. Matera located in the Apennines mountain range and it is about. 250 km to the city of Naples is to be found on the west coast.Matera was allegedly founded by Romans in the 3rd century BC Kr, and today is home to approximately 60 000 inhabitants here (2008).
The historic district is believed by some to be one of the first settlements in Italy. The old town consists of houses or caves that are carved out of rock, and some of the streets goes over the roof of each house. Although many of these caves is uninhabitable, you can now find both bars and hotels in Old Town. At the Piazza Vittorio Veneto, there are many beautiful buildings from 1600 - and 1700's.
Palese Airport belongs to Bari and is approx. 60 km northeast of Matera.
