Klaipeda miniguide
Klaipeda is located at the entrance to Kurisches Lagoon on the Baltic Sea, northwest of Lituauen. The city is Lithuania's third largest city with 192,000 inhabitants. From here the ferry to Kiel and Sassnitz in Germany, and Karlshamn in Sweden.
Klaipeda was founded by German knights sword in 1253, when the city was named Memel. In 1328 came the town under the Teutonic Order, and in the 1500s the city was an important trade center. In 1919 Klaipeda was under Allied administration, and in 1923 annexed the Lithuanian city. Klaipeda is the gateway to the Curonian Spit, an area of nearly 100 miles of sandy beaches. These are just ten minutes by boat from the old port, here is the old sailing ship Meridiana, and a maritime museum. The city is known for its numerous sculptures of Annchen von Tarau.
