Cancun is located in the state, Quintana Roo, on the northeast coast of Yucatánhalvøya and belongs to Mexico .700,000 inhabitants live in the city which lies in a valley at 1430 meters altitude in the Sierra Madre Occidental Mountains.
Cancun is a known tourist destination which is also called the Mexican Caribbean. Most tourist sites are on an island with a bridge connection to the mainland. There are miles of white beaches and crystal clear water. Cancun is regarded as the gateway to the Mayan world. Several temples and ritual locations are easily accessible in the jungle. Visitors can snorkel in rivers, swimming with dolphins and turtles, admire the tropical flora and fauna. Cancun økopark and offers good conditions for bird watchers. There are also many old buildings, with a cathedral from the 1700s.
Cancún International Airport is located sixteen kilometers south of downtown.
