Manzanillo is located in Colima state, where it is the capital of the river Río Colima. Manzanillo is located at 500 meters in height, approx. 50 kilometers from the Pacific Coast. 138,000 inhabitants live in the city (2006). There is a railway to the port of Manzanillo and inner parts of Mexico .The port city is one of Mexico's largest and busiest.

Manzanillo was founded in 1523. The city is known for having good conditions for deep sea fishing, and a resort. It is also a popular cruise ship destination. Visitors can go snorkeling in Manzanillo Bay, where there is a cargo ship which sank in 1959. There are also other wrecks and reefs. In Manzanillo is also good hiking to hidden lakes and waterfalls that pass small villages. From the tops are good views of the Pacific. The city has several sailing events annually.  South of town is Las Hadas is known for its resort. 

Playa de Oro airport is located about 28 kilometers outside of Manzanillo.
