Montenegro is a small country with a relatively modest population (672,000), located in the part of Southeast Europe, which usually is known as the Balkans. The country became an independent state as late as 2006. The residents chose when - through a referendum - to secede from the former union with neighboring Serbia.
The nature of Monenegro is very hilly, and the interior of the country consists mostly of a mountainous landscape, where the highest peak - Zla Kolata - located 2,534 m above sea level Between the mountains are deep valleys and gorges - and some larger lakes. The country has also a ca. 290 km long coastline along the Adriatic - and here we find one of the Balkan region's longest beaches - Velika Plaza (13 km). Otherwise borders Montenegro to Croatia , Bosnia-Herzegovina , Serbia , Kosovo and Albania .
The capital of Podgorica has approx.144,000 inhabitants. Other major cities are Niksic and Pljevlja - while considerably Bar is Montenegro's main seaport.
The busiest airport in Montenegro is Aerodrom Tivat, located at the Bay of Kotor. This is where most tourists come to the resort on the Adriatic coast. Otherwise, it is also an international airport on the outskirts of the capital - Aerodrom Podgorica.
