Peru is South America, and has coastline on the Pacific Ocean in the west. The country has 29.5 million inhabitants (2009) and bordering Ecuador, Colombia, Chile, Brazil and Bolivia.

Lake Titicaca is located on the border between Peru and Bolivia in the north – in the Andes Mountains. This lake is full 3812 feet above sea level and is a major tourist attraction.

Peru has a tropical rainy climate in the east – with over 25 degrees Celsius all year round. In the west, the country desert climate – dry, hot days. As a curiosity may be mentioned that the desert town of Ica in Peru have not seen rain for 400 years.

The capital Lima is located on the west coast, and has 8 million inhabitants in the metropolitan region.Lima is a major transportation hub and the country’s most important economic and cultural center. Lima’s old town is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the city has several museums, parks and monuments.

A little outside of Lima, the suburb of Callao – which is the country’s main seaport.

Other major cities in Peru are: Arequipa, Trujillo and Chimbote.

The country’s main airport is Aeropuerto International Jorge Chavez, located 15 km northwest of the capital.
