Cape Town is located on the southwest coast of South Africa and has approx. 3.5 million residents in the metropolitan area (2008).The city is the capital of the province of Western Cape, and has coastline on the Atlantic Ocean.
Cape Town is the seat of the South African parliament, while the government is located in Pretoria. The city is the economic hub of the province, and has the largest port and airport in the Western Cape.
Cape Town is one of the most popular tourist destinations in South Africa, and has several attractions. One of the most famous is the 1000 m high rock formation Table Mountain, located south of the city. The top of mountains forming a 3 km long plateau, and it is popular to take the cable car up here.
Prison island Robben Island is one of the most visited tourist destinations in the country, which is located 12 km off the coast of Cape Town. The island is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
City of Cape Town is situated on the northern side of the Cape Peninsula and the harbor Victoria & Alfred Waterfront to the city's most popular shopping area. There are shopping centers, markets, restaurants, cinemas and clubs etc.
The world-famous botanical garden "Kirstenbosch Garden" in Cape Town, is also worth a visit - with its many rare plants.
It is also good for swimming in Cape Town, where the sandy beach Boulders Beach is the most famous.
Cape Town International Airport is located 22 miles east of downtown, and is the second largest in South Africa.
