Turkey lies on the border between Europe and Asia, and has 76.8 million inhabitants (2009). 97% of the country lies in Asia - the large peninsula of Anatolia (Asia Minor), and only 3% of Turkey lies in Europe.
The country has coastline on the Mediterranean Sea in the south, the Aegean Sea in the west and the Black Sea in the north. Marmara Sea, also located in the north, connects with both the Black Sea and Aegean Sea. Turkey borders the countries Greece , Bulgaria , Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Syria , Iran and Iraq.
Turkey's landscape consists mostly of highlands and mountain ranges. The highest point is Mount Ararat, situated 5137 meters above sea level The country has a varied climate. Coastal areas in the south and west have typical Mediterranean climate with mild (often wet) winters, and dry, hot summers. Inland has a more continental climate.

Antalya is located on the Mediterranean coast and boasts a large charter tourism during the summer. The port town of Alanya on the Mediterranean Sea is considered to be a popular seaside resort for tourists. The area is often called the "Turkish Riviera".
Turkey has about 15 international airports. Ataturk International Airport is the country's major international airport. It is located 24 km west of Istanbul city center.
