Mjölby is a small town with 12,000 inhabitants, situated in Östergötland County – between the much larger city of Linköping (34 km further east) and Lake Vättern (33 km further west).
In the areas around the city there are numerous historical relics, which are also among Mjölby most visited attractions. This includes two large areas with graves from the Iron Age – Kungshöga gravfält and Solberga gravfält. Otherwise, there are many surviving rune stones from the Viking age within a radius of 1 mil from the city center.
19 km northwest of Mjölby – in the neighboring town of Vadstena – is one of the largest tourist attractions in this part of Sweden : Vadstena Kloster.It was established in 1346 by Sweden’s most famous recent weekend – The heliga Birgitta. In 1386 it was used as the seat of the newly formed Birgittinerordenen. Every year the pilgrimage here with participants from many countries.
Otherwise, there is beautiful scenery around Mjolby – and slightly northwest of downtown, recreation area Skogssjöbadet – which is a very popular destination.
