Portsmouth is located on Portsea Island very south of England. The city belongs to the county of Hampshire which lies west of the country and is the second largest town in Hampshire. Portsmouth was founded in the 1100s, and today there are approximately 200 000 inhabitants in the city (2008). The port of Portsmouth has been one of the most important for several hundred years, both because it is the base of the Royal Navy and as the world’s oldest dry dock is here.
