Tampere (Swedish: Tampere), with its 211,544 inhabitants (2009), Finland’s second largest city.It is located in the southwestern part of the country – and the administrative center of the landscape Pirkanmaa (Swedish: Birka Country). Tampere was founded by the Swedish king Gustav III in 1779. The city’s Swedish name (Tampere) is the location of a waterfall between Lake Pyhäjärvi and Näsijärvi.
Among the most popular sights is the Tampere Art Museum in the center of town. A branch of this Mummidalen (Muumilaakso) – based on the Tove Jansson’s famous children’s books. It is located in the architecturally interesting Main Library Metso.
