Pau (approx. 80,000 inhabitants) is located in southwestern France – in the department of Pyrenees-Atlantiques, falling within the Aquitaine region.The city is situated on a hill, and from the street “Boulevard des Pyrénées” Pau has a wonderful panoramic view of the mountains of the Pyrenees.

Pau is known to be a great winter destination, but also has several other tourist attractions. Just outside the old town is the Château de Pau is now a museum and a historical monument with a particularly fine collection of tapestries. The castle was the royal residence of Henri IV (King of France and Navarre). Two of the castle tower is from the 1100s, and the main tower is from the 1300s. Adjacent to the castle, is a beautiful park.

Other sights: the art museum “Musée des Beaux Arts”, Musée Bernadotte – the birthplace of Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte (who was crowned as king of Sweden and Norway in 1818), Palace Beaumont from the 1800s (which is now a convention center) and the funicular Pau.

The nearest airport is Aéroport Pau-Pyrénées, which is located 7 miles northwest of downtown. The airport has regular flights to Paris, Lyon and London.
