Grenoble – southeastern France, at the foot of the Alps in the region of Rhone-Alps – is the main town in the department (county) Isère.Grenoble has about 160,000 inhabitants and is situated in a valley between high mountains – the River Isere.

Grenoble has many sights and tourist attractions, including old town with Notre Dame Church from 1100 – 1200’s and the Justice Palace from the 1400s. In addition, the city’s natural history museum worth a visit, and the Musée de Grenoble – which contains a rich collection of paintings and sculptures from the 1200s to the present day. The exhibition shows works by Gaugin, Matisse and Picasso. The museum also has a large and beautiful sculpture park.

From downtown you can take the cable car up to Fort de la Bastille (475 m) – a medieval fortress where they have wonderful panoramic views over the city.

Grenoble is also a modern city with great shopping and many nightlife, and it gained a rapid development as a tourist after the Winter Olympics were held here in 1968.

The nearest airport is the Aéroport International de Grenoble Isère, 40 miles northwest of downtown.
