Laon is a city 45 kilometers northwest of Reims, and 200 kilometers northeast of Paris .Laon is the capital of the Ministry of Aisne, in the Picardie region. Approx. 26,000 people live in commercial Laon.
Laon is situated at a strategic level in the Paris Basin, and was fortified as early as the Roman times when the city was known Laudunum. Laon got the royal residence on the 900’s. Among the city’s main buildings, we find the beautiful Notre Dame Cathedral which was begun in 1155 It should be one of France’s finest gothic cathedrals. In Laon is also Saint-Martin church, built in 1100-1300’s, the octagonal temple of lord chapel from the 1100s which now houses an art museum, and a bishop’s palace from the 1100s, which serves as the Justice Palace. Laon has an automatic cableway, Poma 2000, which connects the upper town with the historic center, with the lower part of Laon.
