Nice is located on the French Riviera (Côte d’Azur), and is one of France’s largest cities.It is the administrative center in the department of Alpes-Maritime region Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur. In the Nice area, around 350,000 people, but the city is the center of a larger urban area (including the neighboring towns of Antibes and Cannes) with a total population of nearly 1 million.
Like so many other cities on the Mediterranean Sea, Nice was founded already in ancient times (approx 350 BCKr) by the Greeks. Throughout history the city has been under changing regimes – and the Italian influence has been very strong – which is still felt. Only in 1860 was Nice definitely French.
The attractions of Nice are many. Most famous is impressive seafront Promenade des Anglais, which runs parallel to the long popular beach. Otherwise, the ruins of the old castle La Colline du Château and the Cathedral of Notre Dame is mentioned. Beyond that, the city is especially known for its vibrant and varied nightlife.
