The former mining town Lünen located in the western part of Germany, near the river Lippe, and belong to the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.The town has 88,200 inhabitants (2009), and the city of Dortmund is situated just a 20 minute drive away.

Lünen has several historical sights, and the old town is well preserved half-timbered houses from the 1600s. St. George’s Church from 1366 is also in the area, and is the oldest surviving building in Lünen.

Other tourist attractions in town include the Catholic St. Mary-Kirche from 1896, “Bergarbeiter-Wohnmuseum” (a miner museum), Selimiye Mosque in 2008 (one of the largest mosques in North Rhine-Westphalia) and UFO-tower “Luntec” – located in Technology Park, and is 37 meters high.

“Marine Park Lünen” is an attractive recreational area in town located on Lake Horstmarer. Here are some great swimming in summer with sandy beaches and nice walking trails and green spaces.

The area is also home Schanshell Castle from 1872, which houses Lünen City Museum. This is a local history museum with exhibits of how people lived and lived in the period 1830 to 1930. The exhibition displays including “Workers ‘living room’, toy stoves, cast iron, handicrafts etc.

The nearest airport is Dortmund Airport, located 23 km southeast of Lünen.
