Hersonissos (Chersonisos) is a small town with approx. 9,000 inhabitants, located on Crete’s northern coast approx. 25 km east of the island’s capital, Iraklion .Since antiquity, there has been an important port here, but today Hersonissos is first and foremost a modern tourist resort. Although some of the residents are engaged in agriculture and fishing, the tourism are the main road.

There are few traces left in the city of ancient culture. They have pretty much experience other places in Crete. Some remnants are still here – including an interesting pyramid shaped Roman fountain in the center of town, and the ruins of an early Christian basilica on a rock near the harbor.

When it comes to sites of recent date, the following are mentioned: Aqua World Aquarium, which in addition to fish also has a collection of reptiles from the local fauna – and the outdoor museum Lychnostatis, documenting the different varieties of Cretan folk culture.Otherwise, Hersonissos primarily known for its beautiful beaches – and the city’s bustling nightlife. There are bars, pubs and discotheques in a row.

The nearest airport is the international airport in the capital, Iraklion – “Nikos Kazantzakis”.
