Marrakech is Morocco’s fourth largest city. 861,000 inhabitants live in the city which lies in the inner Morocco in the foothills of the Atlas mountains of 465 meters.
Marrakech is perhaps best known for the colorful market square Jamaa el-Fna square in the old town. Marrakech was founded in 1062 and is one of the four royal cities. Marrakech’s old town with its maze is on the UNESCO list of World Cultural and Natural Heritage. It is surrounded by a wall. Here is the Koutoubia mosque with which was started in 1184 The mosque has a 68 meter high tower. The old town is also a Citadel, mausoleums and a sultan’s palace was begun in the 1200s. Marrakech is a good starting point for trips to the Sahara desert or the high Atlas Mountains. South and east of the city is more olive and palm groves. Visitors can also take a trip to a Turkish bath.
Marrakech-Menara Airport is located six miles outside Marrakech.
