Zwolle is located 80 kilometers northeast of Amsterdam and is the capital of the province of Overijssel in the Netherlands .The city’s name means hill, and it lies between the four rivers surrounding the city Ijssen, Aa, Zwarte Water and Vecht. 118,000 inhabitants live in Zwolle (2008).
Zwolle has been settled since the Stone Age. It was first mentioned in 1040 when the Church of St. Michael, which still exists, was built. Zwolle was granted city status in 1230 and joined the Hanseatic League in 1294. The city has several historic buildings. Some of these are large church with its famous organ, and the Church of Our Lady, Onze Lieve Vrouwerkerk, with a 91 meters high tower, both from the 1400s. Another attraction is Byporten Sassenpoort with its four towers, and bymuseeet. Just outside Zwolle is Weerribben National Park and woodland around Ommen is well suited for cycling.
