Kongsberg is an inland in the county of Buskerud – in the central part of southern Norway. The town has 24,700 inhabitants (2010), and was founded by King Christian IV in 1624. Along the river, which is one of Norway’s longest river, flows through the city.

In 1623 it was found silver in the area, and the Kongsberg silver mines existed until 1957. Today, many tourist attractions in Kongsberg linked to the city’s mining history.

Some of the most visited sights in town, Kongsberg church from 1761, Kongsberg Silver Mines Old Smelting Works in 1844, the Norwegian Mining Museum (a national museum of mining, where the exhibition tells about the over 330 year old history of mining in Kongsberg). The museum also has other departments – including “The Royal Mint” Museum, Museum, Gun Factory Museum and a ski museum.

Norwegian Mining Museum also offers mine walks and city tours, and in summer you can take the waterslides in the silver mines of Saggrenda – 340 meters underground.

Another point of Kongsberg Lågdalsmuseet – a recreation area with old buildings and mini-zoo with farm animals.

The city hosts several annual festivals – including the popular jazz festival in July.

The nearest airport is Sandefjord Airport – Torp, located 87 km southeast of Kongsberg.
