The north-Norwegian municipalities of Narvik is located at Ofotfjorden Nordland county – and is the regional center in the district Ofoten. The municipality borders Sweden to the east and south.
The city of Narvik has 18,400 inhabitants (2010), and is the county’s 3 largest. It has since 1920 been the main port for export of iron ore, and is still an important shipping center.
Narvik has several tourist attractions – including the War Remnants Museum which is located in the main square (with an exhibition of artifacts, photographs, etc. from the 2nd World War). The city also has several war cemeteries and monuments – including Narvik New Cemetery with memorial Norwegian, French, English, Polish and German soldiers who fell during the 2 World War II.
Other sights in the city is Narvik Church in 1925, Park Area Burn Holtet with the 4000 year old rock carvings, Narvikfjellet the gondola that takes visitors up the mountain restaurant 656 meters in 7 minutes – where you can get a fantastic panoramic view over the city and the fjord and Ofoten Museum (with a major historical exhibition).
In winter, the city has a great ski hill at Fagerensfjellet, and in the center of Narvik, there are good shopping opportunities with shops and malls.
Norway’s national mountain – Stetind (1392 m) – located just a few mil from Narvik in Tysfjord municipality, and is a major tourist attraction.
Narvik Airport – Framnes is 2 km outside the center, and offers flights to Bodø and Andenes.
The larger airport Harstad / Narvik Airport – Evenes, located 76 km west of Narvik.
