Sandnessjøen is a city and administrative center in Alstahaug, located in Nordland county. The town has 5,700 inhabitants (2009) and belongs to the region and landscape Helgeland.

Sandnessjøen located on the island Alsten, located at the mouth of Vefsnfjorden. The city is a transport hub and commercial center for the outer Helgeland, and the port call at Coastal Voyage ( BergenKirkenes ). From the port there are ferry connections to, among others Bodø.

Sandnessjøen have a bridge connection to the mainland via the 1,100-meter Helgeland Bridge.

A little south of town is the mountain range the “seven sisters”, who has been a landmark for the region since time immemorial. The highest peak is Botnakrona, which measures 1,072 meters above sea level “The Seven Sisters” is a popular tourist attraction that is suitable for hiking. The marked trail up to each state.

Other area attractions include Petter Dass Museum, located just outside Sandnes town center, at the peaceful Alstahaug courtyard, which is a popular recreation area.

The museum is dedicated to the poet priest Petter Dass (1646 – 1707), and here is the old vicarage from the 1700s, with exhibitions, as well as the relatively new museum building (from 2007) with exhibition hall, museum shop and café.

Nearest neighbor is Alstahaug church, erected in the 1200s in soapstone.
