The northern Norwegian town of Svolvaer is Vågan municipality in Nordland county in Norway, has 4,200 inhabitants (2009).Svolvaer is located on the south side of Austvågøya in the Lofoten Islands and the island is connected to the mainland via bridges.
Svolvaer Lofoten’s largest fishing villages and most important commercial center in the region. The city’s port has daily arrivals of Coastal Voyage ( Bergen – Kirkenes ), and the ferry to Bodø and Hamarøy.
The city landmark is “Svolvaer Goat” – a 40 meter high cliff with two “goat horn” on top. This is located on the hillside above the city center and also North-Norway’s most famous rock climbing.
Other tourist attractions in town include Svolvaer Church from 1934, the North Norwegian Artist Centre – an exhibition of contemporary visual arts and crafts, Galleri Dagfinn Bakke – and Lofoten War Memorial Museum – with a focus on North Norway and Lofoten during the 2 World War II, where you can see the exhibition of uniforms, artifacts and photographs.
In addition, “Ice Magic” a great attraction in town. This is the world’s only ice gallery and bar – where you can see iskunstverk as well as sculptures and installations made of ice. The place has a very special atmosphere, and is right on the quayside in Svolvaer.
The city has other beautiful scenery, and you can experience the midnight sun in summer and the unique northern lights in winter.
