Rustenburg is located at the foothills of the Magaliesberg in the North West province, and has approximately 400,000 inhabitants. The city is known for its mining industry and the many nature reserves and national parks in the area. Rustenburg is located on the Highveld plateau approx. 1500 m.

There are several cultural and historical attractions in and around the city, and in Rustenburg are the old churches Angelican Church from 1871 and the Dutch Reformed Church from 1898.

Rustenburg Museum is worth a visit, where visitors can learn more about local archeology and history. Museum located in the town hall.

The large nature reserves in the area are popular destinations for tourists. Kgaswane Nature Reserve is located 5 km from Rustenburg center, and Madikwe National Park lies 226 km northwest of Rustenburg. This national park has the largest concentration of elephants in South Africa .

Pilanesberg Nature Reserve is located 60 km north of the city, and is the 4th largest in the country. You can meet a rich wildlife with lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos, buffaloes, giraffes and more than 350 different bird species.

Rustenburg is hosting the World Cup in 2010 at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium, which seats 42,000 spectators.
