Santander is the capital of the province and the region of Cantabria, with a population that was measured at over 180 000 in 2009. Santander is located on the north coast in the western part of Spain bordering the Bay of Biscay. The port is a fishing port and an export port where it carried goods such as coal, wine and wheat. It is about 450 km to the capital Madrid to the south and a little over 200 km to the French border in the east.
Santander is a resort with fine beaches and many attractions. Magdalena Peninsula is a great place to spend the day. Here are the beautiful beaches, a small zoo with penguins, an open air museum and a former royal summer palace. In the center you can enjoy museums like Museum of Art, Museum of Fine Arts and a casino. The old town was almost completely destroyed by a great fire in 1941, but it is still possible to see historic buildings such as the restored Cathedral of the 1200s.
