Lund is situated in southern Sweden, and is part of Skåne County.The city has 76,200 inhabitants (2005), while the whole municipality has a population of 109,000 (2009). The city is close to the Øresund – approximately 17 km northeast of Malmö, and only 60 km from the Danish capital Copenhagen .
Lund was founded around the year 990, and is one of the country’s oldest cities. Lund is best known for its university which was inaugurated in 1882, and today has approx. 30,000 students.
The city has a rich cultural life with theaters, museums, art galleries and concert venues. In addition, the city has good shopping and a vibrant nightlife. The architecture of the center consists of a mixture of the old downtown and modern buildings.
Lund Cathedral from the 1100s is one of the most visited attractions. Other tourist attractions in the city are: The Cultural History Museum, Lund gamla observatory from 1867, Lunds Konsthall – with Swedish and Nordic contemporary art, Skissernas Museum, Zoological Museum, Historical Museum – with the Cathedral Museum and the medieval exhibition, as well as the city’s botanical garden – with over 7000 different plants.
The nearest airport is Malmö – Sturup Airport, located 26 km southeast of Lund.
