Skellefteå, which has approx. 33,000 inhabitants, situated in Västerbotten County – 94 miles south of Piteå and 136 km north of Umeå .Skellefteälven runs through the city, and the distance from the center of the river outlet in the Gulf of Bothnia is about. 15 km. There is Skelleftehamn (approx. 3,200 inhabitants), which acts as Skellefteå “port”.
Skellefteå evolved gradually into a town from around 1730 until the full trading rights was achieved in 1845. A church had however been here ever since the 1100s. Today’s main church, Skellefteå Landsförsamlings Kyrka, was begun in the 1300s – but later both been greatly remodeled and expanded. Together with the Bonn district Stan (which includes 116 surviving so-called “kyrkstugor”) and Sweden’s oldest wooden bridge (Lejonströmsbron from 1737) included the church in a cultural area called “Skellefteå sockencentrum”. This area is the city’s main tourist attraction.
Skellefteå has many friluftsakiviteter to offer – summer and winter. There are several types of winter sports venues in and around the city – and the summer is such opportunities for river fishing. Moreover, there are several attractions for children such as summer park Lilliput Land and Water Park Vitbergsbadet (which incidentally is also attractive to adults).
The regional airport Skellefteå flygplats located 20 miles south of downtown – and have regular routes to Stockholm (Arlanda) .
