Skövde is situated in Västra Götaland – midway between the two large lakes Vänern and Vättern. The city, which was founded in the 1300s, currently has approx. 32,000 inhabitants – and has a long history as a garrison.
Among the cultural attractions of Skövde, we find Garrison Museum and the Museum of Skövde. Moreover, it is relatively new Skovde Cultural Centre a place where a number of major cultural events. The house contains both the art museum, theater, library and archive. Otherwise, it must be mentioned that Götebogsoperan has a branch in here.
A major fire in 1759 put most of the town Skövde in ruins. Today, only one building left in downtown, which was built before the fire – Helens Stuga (probably listed at the beginning of the 1700s).
Skövde is also known as a lively shopping town – and there are several modern shopping malls here. Among them are Commerce, Vasaporten and Elin Esplanad the largest.
There is a small airport just outside town, but currently operate the only taxi flights there. Nearest major airport is the Jonkoping Airport, located 72 km south of Skövde.
