Sierre is a small town in the Swiss canton of Valais (French: Valais), and has 15,400 inhabitants (2008). Sierre is located southwest of the country, and is a bilingual city – where it is spoken in both French and German.
The city has a large tourist traffic all year round and is the starting point for outdoor activities in Val d’Anniviers – a valley in the Swiss Alps.
Sierre is a popular winter resort with great skiing and snowboarding opportunities. From the city has a connection to Crans-Montana (French: Crans sur Sierre) via cable car. Crans-Montana is located on a plateau to Sierre – approx. 1500 m above sea level – where you have good views of the Valais Alps and especially Weissenhorn – which rises 4,505 meters above sea level
The city’s most valuable buildings are the beautiful town hall and the church of St. Catherine – both from the 1600s. Another tourist attraction is the Château de Villa – a beautiful architectural complex of the 1500s. Château de Villa has an octagonal tower and a grand entrance, and inside you can visit a nice restaurant and wine bar.
In addition, tourists can visit the wine museum “Musée de la Vigne Valaisan a du Vin”.
