The coastal town of Ålesund is located in Sunnmøre in More og Romsdal county, facing the Norwegian Sea, and has 42,000 inhabitants (2008). Ålesund has one of the largest export ports for dried cod, and the city is also an industrial and commercial center for the region and an important transport hub. Ålesund received city status in 1848.
Some of the most famous tourist attractions of the city is Ålesund Church from 1909, Borgund Church (originally from 1130) Aalesund Art Society (with the exhibition of contemporary art), Alesund Museum (a museum of local history with a focus on the hunting, fishing and maritime history), the Medieval Museum with archaeological excavations, Atlantic Sea Park (an outdoor area with old buildings, cultural exhibition, collection of boats, etc.), as well as the Art Museum KUBE – a county gallery of local, regional and international art.The exhibition shows paintings, photographs, video, sculpture, architecture and design.
“Art Nouveau Centre” in Ålesund is NOK an attraction, located in the center of town (Apotekergården). The place was opened in 2003 and is a national center for Art Nouveau / Art Nouveau with both permanent and temporary exhibitions.
3.5 km west of Ålesund lies “Atlantic Park” – one of Northern Europe’s largest saltwater aquariums – which is also an attraction for the whole family.
Ålesund was voted the most beautiful city by the British newspaper “The Times” in 2009.
