Darwin is the northernmost of Australia’s major cities – and the capital of the Northern Territory.The city is situated on the Beagle Gulf and has 115,000 inhabitants (2006). It was founded in 1869 and located in an area where it periodically blowing very strong winds. All three times the city has been partly destroyed by the cyclone – the last time in 1974.
Darwin has a tropical climate – with rainy season from December to April and dry the rest of the year. With an average maximum temperature of 32 degrees C and a minimum temperature of 23.2 degrees C, it is very hot here all year. It is very rarely the temperature falls below 20 degrees C.
