The small town of Carmarthen lies beside the River Tywi and the main town of the county of Carmarthenshire. Carmarthen has about 20,000 inhabitants and is one of Wales ‘s oldest cities.With its strategic location 13 km from the Bristol Channel, the city was one of the most important in Wales in the Middle Ages.

The city has a number of preserved monuments, many old buildings and the ruins of a Norman castle. This is located on a hill overlooking the river Tywi. Other attractions include St. Peter’s Church from 1000-century, the great Roman amphitheater and the city museum which is located a few kilometers outside the center, and local historical exhibits of such archaeological artifacts and paintings.

The Gwili Railway is an attraction in Carmarthen. This is a former railroad line from Carmarthen to Aberystwyth is reopened for tourist traffic. The old steam locomotive that runs through a beautiful wooded valley is a popular getaway for both locals and tourists.

Picton Monument (originally from 1828) is a familiar landmark in the city. The monument is 75 meters high and was made ??in memory of Sir Thomas Picton –   who died in the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.Monument as seen today is a reconstruction from 1988.

Carmarthen are also many golf courses and charming local shops in the center and a botanical garden. Approx. 56 km west of downtown, Oakwood Theme Park (by Pembrokeshire), and is an attraction for the whole family.
