Puerto Plata’s official name is San Felipe de Puerto Plata. The city was founded by Christopher Columbus in 1503, and in 2007 there were approximately 120 000 inhabitants in the city.

There are excellent opportunities for diving, and just outside of Puerto Plata is Ocean World Adventure Park, Marina & Casino with ocean creatures and casinos. In town to visit one of the many museums, including the Amber Museum which displays the history and fossils. There is a cable car to the summit of Mount Isabel, from which it is an incredible view and a botanical garden and restaurants.
