Castres is a city in southern France in the department of Tarn.The city is located 72 km east of Toulouse on the river Agout. Approx. 46,000 inhabitants live in Castres, located 172 meters above sea level.
The city is perhaps best known as the French socialist leader Jean Jaurès birthplace. A museum was dedicated to him in 1988. At the center, the Place Jean-Jaurès, the church of Notre-Dame de la Plata from the 1700s, and the Cathedral of St.-Benoît from 1677. Cathedral’s gardens were designed by Le Nôtre, who also designed the park at Versailles. The city also has a Goya museum, named after the Spanish painter Francisco Goya. This museum has the largest collection of Spanish paintings in France, and also includes works by Velazquez and Zurbaran. The museum opened in 1840 and has approx. 28,000 visitors annually. Castres hosts an annual short film festival.
