Hamm is located in the western part of Germany, near the river Lippe, and has approximately 184,000 inhabitants (2008).The city belongs to the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, located on the eastern fringe of the Ruhr.

Hamm is an important railway junction, and both the mining and steel industries are important industries.

The city’s most famous building is the “Glass Elephant” in Maximillan Park. The 35 meter high structure houses a tropehus, which is a major tourist attraction.

Other tourist attractions in the city is St. Paul’s Church in Gothic style from 1275, the Catholic St. Agnes Church from 1515, Gustav Lübcke Museum (with works of art from the 1900s, and a collection of Egyptian art), the Royal Palace Heessen (originally from 1200’s) “Mark Burg” (a fortress from 1198), Hamm Zoo (zoo, which also contains a natural history museum), Sri Kamadchi Ampal (one of Europe’s largest Hindu temples, built in 2002) – as well as railway museum, where visitors can travel with a historic steam train.

Hamm has other great shopping opportunities. There are many shops, department stores and shopping malls – and the city hosts several annual festivals.

Hamm is situated right on the highway (Autobahn) A44 – between A1 and A2.

The nearest airport is Dortmund Airport, which is located 32 km west of Hamm.
