Harare, formerly known as Salisbury, the capital of the southern African country of Zimbabwe .The town has approx. 1.5 million inhabitants, and is also the country’s largest city.
Harare was founded as a fortress in 1890 by British colonists under the leadership of Cecil Rhodes. It is famous for its many parks – where the great National Botanic Garden is the most visited. A little outside the city is also the beautiful and magnificent national park The Mukuvisi Woodlands.
Otherwise, the National Gallery – with both permanent and temporary exhibitions – named among the sights. The same applies to the Queen Victoria Museum. The National Archives – with plenty of interesting documentation of Zimbabwe’s history – is a popular destination.
Harare has several large shopping centers, where the largest and most unique is the Eastgate Center, which is fairly middle of the city. It has an air conditioning system that is completely organic and “natural” – probably the first of its kind in the world. Another popular shopping center is West Gate Mall.
Harare International Airport – which has one of Africa’s longest runways – is located 12 km south of the city.
