Locarno is located in the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino – specifically in the southeastern part of Switzerland near the Italian border. The city’s picturesque location at the northern end of the large lake Lago Maggiore – and at the foot of the Alps – has made Locarno into a popular tourist destination. The population of 15,000 rises to 65,000, the suburbs are included.
The old town Città Vecchia is one of the main attractions in Locarno. Otherwise, some of the most sought after sites on the edge of – or, or just outside – the city center. This includes castle Castello Visconteo from the 1100s and the monastery Madonna del Sasso. The latter is in the high-altitude village Orselina. From here the cable car to the top of the 1,340 m high mountain Cardaca – where you can be transported with the chair lift to the top of Cinetta (1,671 m). From both peaks have a fantastic view.
One attraction of a different type is Astrovia Locarno, which is a model of the solar system in scale 1:1 billion. The sun and the planets are places along the bike paths in the terrain, and the longest distance – from the Sun (on the outskirts of the Locarno) and Pluto (in the village characters) – is 6 km.
The central square of Piazza Grande in the Città Vecchia (“Old Town”) is the summer venue for many outdoor concerts – especially in connection with the Moon and Stars Festival in July each year. Another great annual kulturegivenhet the prestigious Locarno International Film Festival in August.
