Marburg is located in the central German state of Hesse – at the river Lahn – and has about 80,000 inhabitants (2009). It is the country’s four major university towns. “Philippe-University” is the oldest Protestant university in the world and was founded in 1527.

Old Town is one of the tourist attractions of Marburg, with its many beautiful medieval buildings., Cozy cafes and shops. The city is also famous for its medieval churches – particularly ‘Elisabethkirche “from 1235

The castle “Marburger Schloss” – located on a hill above the town – is perhaps the biggest point of interest. The castle was built as a fortress during the period 1200 – 1400’s, and today belong to parts of the building university museum. The museum shows visitors his exhibition on the city’s cultural history, and in addition is often the theater, concerts and cultural events here. There is also a popular outdoor cinema in the park during the summer.

Other tourist attractions in Marburg, the old city hall from 1527, the Fine Arts in the university building (with a large collection of paintings from 1800 – and 1900’s), a botanical garden, an ethnographic collection, a mineralogical museum with exhibits of minerals, gems and meteorites – and “Marburger Kunstverein”, showing exhibitions of contemporary art.

On a hill a little east of the city is the tourist attraction “Spiegelslustturm” – a 36 meter high observation tower from the 1800s – where visitors get a great view over the city and castle. The place has a café / restaurant.

The nearest airport is Frankfurt International Airport, located 109 km south of Marburg.
