The population is 1,762 (2009), and city status was achieved in 2007. The location of the elongated lake Strondafjorden is beautiful and ideal for fishing and other outdoor activities.
Fagernes’ history dates back to 1857, when the first trading was established here. Half a century later (in 1906) was built a railway station on Valdresbanen here, which gave the development an important push forward.
Fagernes is a natural starting point for adventure tours in the inviting Valdres valley, but there are sights you should pick up in and around the city. Here the Valdres Folk Museum at Storøya by Strondafjorden particularly mentioned. It is the 4th largest open air museum (opened in 1901). Moreover, “Slate Square” is a popular gathering place, where it also carried a variety of cultural activities in the summer. The square was built to commemorate the site’s tradition-rich shale production, and in 2000 was chosen as the millennium for North Aurdal municipality.
From Fagernes is not far from the popular tourist destination that Beitostølen (known winter resort) and Vassfaret (landscape, which occasionally is seen both bears and wolves). Beitostølen is located 36 km north of Fagernes, while one can get to Vassfaret by running 52 km to the south.
